Ameera al-Taweel is a philanthropist, a progressive, and married to one of the richest men in the world — Al-Waleed bin Talal — who is also a philanthropist and progressive who works to break down the old Saudi stereotypes about women. She dresses as she does to make a political point.

By any standard other than the most conservative, Princess Ameera dresses modestly and conservatively. She does not go around covered in an abaya, particularly outside of Saudi Arabia. She dresses to meet the socially conservative norm of whatever country she’s in, without accepting the extreme view of modesty.

She and her husband are working to expand the space in which women in Saudi Arabia live and work by offering personal demonstrations of the fact that men and women mixing in the workplace do not automatically lead to sinful behavior.

Her dress — at least that which is available through online photographs — does not reveal much skin and is actually fairly typical of what rich Saudi women wear at home and under their abayas. The only ones she’s shocking are the extremists of either $@x.
