The Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC) will be importing petroleum products (petrol and diesel) of Euro 4 standard from coming April.

The state-owned oil monopoly will import the fuel of the Euro 4 standard from the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC). IOC is the sole supplier of petroleum products to Nepal.

“NOC aims to sell the Euro 4 fuel from coming April,” said NOC Spokesperson Bhanubhakta Khanal, “IOC said it will be supplying the petroleum products of the standard from the month.”

NOC believes that the use of Euro 4 fuel will help to keep the atmosphere clean as it has less amount of Sulfur compared to the other standards. Euro standard is fixed taking carbon emission into account. Worldwide, fuel ranging from Euro 1-6 are being produced and used.

India has already started use of Euro 4 fuel in Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana among other provinces from April this year.
Indian Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan had announced that it will directly opt for Euro 6 fuel from 2020. He had announced to that end as the amount of Sulfur in Euro 5 and Euro 4 doesn’t vary significantly.

Euro 4 fuel will cost more that the Euro 3 fuel as the refineries in India are increasing capital for being capable to produce the Euro 4 fuel. However, the price hike will be insignificant, according to NOC Spokesperson Khanal.

“The fuel of the Euro 4 standard might cost 10-25 paisa more than the existing price,” he said, “But, nothing can be said until IOC begins supply.”

According to him, the vehicles of the Euro 3 standard can easily consume the fuel of the Euro 4 standard.

NOC doesn’t needs to make a drastic change in its physical infrastructures to import, store and sell the Euro 4 fuel.
