Twenty-four year old Surez Gurung has a remarkable story to tell. The young boy from Nepal never thought he would one day become a professional boxer in Hong Kong. During his troubled teenage years in Hong Kong, Surez got into a street fight that changed his life. It was then he met a British Hong Kong police officer Danny Lawely and since then there has been no looking back. Lawely introduced the world of boxing to Surez at the age of fourteen in a bid utilize his energy in a positive way and keep him out of the dangers of the street. It is no surprise that Surez counts Coach Danny as his great influence.

The past year was an unforgettable one for Surez as  he made his professional debut on the undercard of Ricky Hatton’s “Road To Glory”, the biggest boxing event that Hong Kong had ever seen. Surez won the match against Filipino boxer Roldan Bullong.

Operation Breakthrough, an organisation that aims to help and positively reinforce young people from diverse communities has been a big support to Surez. The young professional boxer recently graduated with a bachelors degree in Leisure and Event Management. Surez hopes to make professional boxing his career and has been inspired by his good friend Rex’s (Tso) boxing journey.
