This is really heartwarming and inspiring that espite the mounting odds stacked against their unborn conjoined twins, Eric and Elysse Mata chose to put their faith in God. They knew that the challenges they were up against were going to be tough, but they made the decision not to terminate the pregnancy as doctors suggested. These proud parents of four beautiful children, have gone through very difficult and uncertain times in the last few years—when they had to make the most unusual and critical decisions for the lives of their beloved children. This is the story of their faith and courage. On April 11th, 2014, Elysse gave birth to the twin girls, who were connected by their chest wall, lungs, pericardial sac (the lining of the heart), diaphragm, liver, intestines, colon and pelvis. Doctors had advised the mother to end her pregnancy, but the Matas never considered that an option. When surgeons at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, Texas, agreed to help separate the 10-month-old twins, their parents wanted nothing more than to give them a fighting chance. And the fact that the girls each had their own individual hearts, despite being fused from their hips to their rib cages, gave surgeons hope. After a team of 12 surgeons spent 26 hours separating the twins, the girls have made extraordinary health strides. They are walking, talking and learning to be independent each day.
