Kanchi Tamang scooped her into her arms and ran as their house in Nepal’s Dhading district collapsed around them.
Laxmi, now two, and her family were the lucky ones – they survived the deadly earthquake which struck exactly a year ago. But without access to proper medical care for her severe burns, the youngster’s wrist is now bent at a 90 degree angle and her fingers are no more than stumps.

‘At first, I hadn’t realised what had happened to her,’ Kanchi said. ‘When she cried out, all I could do was pick her up and run outside. Moments later, my house collapsed. The aftershocks were so strong, I couldn’t even walk properly.’
