Largest Cyst Removed From A 24-Year-Old Woman’s Body

A woman with what's believed to be the world's largest cyst has had the five stone tumour removed in a successful attempt to save her life. Scans revealed it has swelled to a whopping 5st 3lbs in just under a year - putting the 24-year-old unnamed woman at risk of heart failure.

The growth weighed the same as ten new born babies - or roughly equal to the weight of a ten year old child. The unnamed 24-year-old, from Mexico, noticed she was gaining weight despite being on a diet. But scans later revealed she was suffering from an ovarian cyst which grew ferociously over 11 months.

By the time of surgery it had a density of five stone and put her at risk of heart failure as it crushed her internal organs, meaning she had problems walking, breathing and eating. Doctors were faced with no choice but to operate.

Dr. Erik Hanson Viana, 27, at the Mexico General Hospital, performed pioneering surgery to remove the cyst - believed to be the biggest one ever removed whole - last year. Now, more than six months on, details of the operation can be revealed as the patient has regained mobility and returned to a normal life.
